Tumescent Liposuction

Liposuction techniques are commonly used by cosmetic surgeons to eliminate stubborn pockets of excess fat that generally do not respond to diet and exercise alone. The side effects of traditional liposuction, including swelling, discomfort, blood loss and infection can be reduced greatly with a procedure called Tumescent Liposuction. This procedure can be extremely effective in reducing fat in the lower parts of one’s body, including the legs, thighs, knees, buttocks, hips and abdomen. This form of liposuction is also effective on parts of the upper body, including the arms, neck, and certain parts of the face.

The Tumescent Liposuction Procedure

The first step doctors take in a tumescent liposuction procedure is to inject a saline-based medicated solution into the treatment area. This fluid causes the targeted area to swell and become firmer, allowing the doctor more precision and control while performing the surgery. The fluid also shrinks the capillaries temporarily, minimizing blood loss. Lastly, a small incision is made through which the vacuum tube, or cannula, is inserted to suction away excess fat from the body.

Tumescent liposuction patients remain awake during the procedure, which is an added benefit for those seeking body contouring. Patients are usually able to leave the doctor’s office shortly after having their procedure.
Both men and women will likely need to wear a compression garment for up to a few weeks after their procedure. After just a few days, most tumescent liposuction recipients are able to resume work.

Candidates for Tumescent Liposuction
Tumescent liposuction provides the best results for those generally healthy men and women, who are mildly to moderately overweight, yet follow a reasonably healthy diet and exercise regimen. Tumescent liposuction can be used in some instances to address issues with cellulite.
