LASIK eye surgery can benefit those with hyperopia (farsightedness), myopia (nearsightedness), or astigmatism (an uneven curve in the lens or cornea that can lead to blurred vision).
Ideal candidates for LASIK are those who are at least 18 years of age, and in generally good health. LASIK tends to be most successful in those with a regular and steady eye prescription.
Those who are involved with sports that can result in injuries of the face or eyes are not good candidates for the LASIK procedure.
Individuals who have certain health conditions may not be good candidates for LASIK surgery. These include illnesses that cause hormone variations in the body. Those who take medications that can lead to changes in vision or that could possibly interfere with healing following the procedure should consult their doctor before considering LASIK. Those who suffer from diseases that affects the health of the eyes or women who are breastfeeding or pregnant may not be ideal candidates for LASIK.
Sometimes preexisting conditions can cause a negative impact on the success of LASIK surgery. Those with large pupils, very steep or very thin corneas, history of past surgeries such as photorefractive keratectomy or radial keratomy or have large refractive errors may not be appropriate candiates for conventional LASIK.
Modern LASIK procedures such as Epi-LASIK or LASEK may be the best options for those individuals who do not qualify for traditional LASIK.
