Breast Augmentation in Phoenix - Breast Implant Surgery

Breast augmentation is a proven cosmetic surgery procedure that uses silicone or saline breast implants to enhance the size of a patient’s breasts. Enhancement surgery is typically performed because of a patient’s general dissatisfaction with the size and shape of her breasts, or to restore the fullness or volume lost after weight loss, breast cancer surgery, or childbirth.

TYPES OF IMPLANTS:
There are many styles, shapes, and materials from which to choose when it comes to selecting breast implants. Silicone and saline breast implants are both FDA approved, and widely used in the United States as well as other countries. Both silicone and saline implants are made using a translucent outer shell, composed of a substance called silicone elastomer. Saline implants are filled with a sterile saline solution, often at the time of surgery. The FDA recently lifted a ban on silicone implants, which are filled with what is known as a “cohesive” silicone gel, that any plastic surgeons and patients agree, allows for a softer, more natural look and feel after breast augmentation surgery.

SURGICAL PLACEMENT TECHNIQUES:
Breast implants can be placed above, partially behind or completely behind the pectoral muscles. There are four main breast augmentation surgical techniques available, which are based on where the incision is made:

• Inframammary (under the breast) - This is the most common breast augmentation technique. The implant is inserted into the crease where the breast and the chest come together, and placed over the pectoral muscles.
• Transaxillary (under the arm) - This procedure is performed to minimize scarring. The implant is inserted through the armpit, and is generally placed below the pectoral muscles.
• Transumbilical (navel) - No incisions are made in the breast with this technique. The implant is instead inserted into the navel, and then moved up to the breast area, above the pectoral muscles. This technique is generally not the preferred method of plastic surgeons, as many belive it can cause a great deal of unnecessary trauma to the body.
• Periareolar (around the areola) - The implant is inserted directly into the breast through the areola, allowing for minimal scarring. The implant can be placed in various positions around the pectoral muscles.

WHO IS A CANDIDATE?
Generally healthy women who have a positive self image, as well as realistic expectations are the best candidates for breast augmentation surgery, while certain medical isues such as cardiac issues, or lifestyle choices such as smoking, may preclude some women from having enhancement surgery. Women with unrealistic expectations for what breast augmentation surgery can and cannot accomplish, are often deemed ineligible for surgery, and may want to evaluate and discuss other options with their plastic surgeon.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT PLASTIC SURGEON:
There a number of factors that should be considered when choosing a plastic surgeon for breast augmentation. It is best to select a breast and body plastic surgeon that is board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. These surgeons are required to have more specialized training than other surgeons, and also focus primarily on plastic and reconstructive surgery. The plastic surgeon you choose should take the time to answer any questions about the procedure that you may have, and be able to provide before and after photos, as well as testimonials from previous satisfied patients.
