Scottsdale eye doctors, and doctors other than ophthalmologists, often can diagnose cataracts and suggest treatment options or lifestyle modifications to patients who do not require cataract surgery. However, more severe cataracts that require surgical cataract removal do require a visit to an eye doctor for treatment. 

Ophthalmologists are highly qualified eye docotrs who have completed specialized training, and have executed numerous eye surgeries while completing a residency program following medical school.

Many patients with cataracts are referred to an ophthalmologist by their primary care physician, or family members and friends who have had positive experiences with cataract surgery.

It is best to look for an ophthalmologist who has become board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology. These doctors have taken oral and written examinations, and have unique knowledge in the ophthalmology field that other surgeons don't. Along with being board certified, qualified ophthalmologists frequently belong to one or more professional organizations like the American Academy of Ophthalmology or American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery.

When choosing an eye surgeon for cataract surgery, or any type of laser vision correction, make sure to inquire about the surgeon's education, certifications, background, and professional memberships.  It is also critical to inquire about the surgeon's specified experience with the removal of cataracts. Also, be sure to figure out if the surgeon relies strictly on implantable lenses, such as monofocal IOL, or if they provide the option of using more advanced lenses, such as ReSTOR and ReZOOM to replace the natural lenses that are removed during the operation.
